TUNE UP YOUR WEB SITE! (Part 1 of 2)
By Mark Idzik
Two of the most important aspects of having a web site are:
1) Being Found - through search engines, links, advertisements
or e-zines and ..
2) Being Seen - making sure that your visitors can see your
web site and find what they are looking for!
In our last issue we talked about how to POSITION and get
found through search engines. Now we're going to discuss how
to take a critical look at your site and make any needed
changes to make it the best it can be. Remember, the net
is the ultimate competitive field. Your customers won't be
impressed with just a "good site" - it has to be fantastic!
Overall Site Look
Clean, professional and organized look. You only have a few
seconds to make an impression when someone visits your site.
Make it stand out and give your visitors a reason to stay.
Home Page
This page should contain a clear message - what is this site
about? If someone can't figure out what your purpose is in
a few seconds, you should re-design your page. Display clear,
easy to use navigation and links to all sections of your site.
Content
The more content, the better. You can never have too much,
and you can never update frequently enough. Keep your site
fresh with new content weekly.
Communicate with Visitors
Every page should have a link to your email, contact form or
telephone number. Make it easy for visitors to get in touch
with you. The easier you make it, the more business you will
gain.
New Technology
Java applets, plug-ins and any other new technology is great
- but not for most sites. They usually make the visitor wait,
download something, or simply crash their browser. Chances
are they won't be back. It's too easy to just click to the
next site. Make it easy for your visitors and keep your pages
simple and easy to access.
